TRL Krosaki is the first refractories company to adopt Integrated Management System, Certified to ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 & OSHAS 18001:2007.

We have reinvigorated the environment department with highly experienced technical manpower and state-of-the-art equipment. Two independent cell have been created to take care of the overall environmental issues, (i) Environment Protection Cell, and (ii) Environmental Monitoring Cell. The Environment Protection Cell takes care of day-to-day management of environmental pollution (which includes air, water, hazardous waste etc.), natural resource conservation and developmental activities whereas the Environmental Monitoring Cell takes care of the monitoring of various parameters as per the norms of Pollution Control Board.

We have installed various kinds of pollution control equipment and facilities in the plant to reduce air pollution, water pollution and also for hazardous waste management. Some of the facilities are as below:

We have 22 numbers of dust filter units (Bag Filters and Pulsejet Filters) and 2 numbers of Electrostatic Precipitators (ESP), which helps us to prevent air pollution. The above equipments are maintained in fully operating condition, which helps us to prevent any dust emission from our stacks. Skilled and technically competent manpower are posted to take care of these equipments. We consistently maintain the norms of pollution control board for all parameters of air pollution. A mechanical road sweeper is in operation for cleaning the roads & floor of Shop to control fugitive dust also water is sprayed regularly on roads, raw material unloading area & truck parking area to suppress fugitive dust..

Wash water discharge:

To take care of wash water and storm water we have three outlets which are treated through settling tanks followed by filter beds in key locations in and around the plant, namely O-Type, L-Type and Jurabaga. This discharge water passes all SPCB norms. Final treated water of WWTP of three out let is being used by the villagers for their Irrigation purpose

Zero discharge of effluent:

The effluent generated from Gas producer plant is treated in the new state-of-the-art Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) at the rate of 20KL/day. There is a Tertiary treatment stage for polishing the secondary stage treated discharge. This stage is having many more treatment unit comprising are as under.

  • Multi Grade Filter
  • Activated carbon Filter (ACF1)
  • Ultrafiltration Process
  • Resin column
  • Activated Carbon Filter (ACF2)
  • Rivers Osmosis Process
  • Evaporator with Boiler

The effluents generated from gas producers operation are treated in our Effluent treatment Plant (ETP). There are two impervious lagoons of 1600 KL storage capacity each to store the treated water. The treated water meets the norms of Pollution Control Board and it is used in our process. The final stage RO treated water is being recycled in to the Gas producer plant & there is no treated water discharge to outside. All the parameters are monitored on daily basis to ascertain the abnormalities and to take preventive action.

We have a Secured Engineering Landfill of 500MT storage capacity for safe disposal of Hazardous wastes as per the guidelines of MOEF. There are two bore wells of 80meters each to monitor the quality of ground water. M/S Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd, Hyderabad was engaged to construct the project at a cost of Rs. 22 lacs. The sludge generated from ETP is disposed on a regular basis at CHWTSDF maintained by M/S Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd, at Jajpur, Odisha.

During 2014-15, 43,252 nos. of forest and ornamental species of trees were planted. With the support of our own nursery, we distributed saplings of different species i.e. forest, ornamental and fruit bearing plants to schools, farmers, neighboring industries, government departments and our employees. Over the years, our nursery has grown in capacity and we are able to supply more than one lakh saplings. We are able to create a green belt in our works premises covering 33.3 % of land.

We have a most modern environmental laboratory (affiliated to Sambalpur University) with all facilities was set-up way back in 1994-95 & high quality laboratory equipments are installed time to time to upgrade the laboratory facility. This environment laboratory monitor and measure all parameters of air and water pollution, drinking water and wastes. We also monitor the quality of drinking water facilities of surrounding villages twice in a year and the same is communicated to the villagers by our Community Development Department.

We at TRL Krosaki have adopted the Climate Change policy for Tata Companies; A Climate Change Governance Committee (CCGC) with the Chairmanship of MD is reviewing the climate change initiatives on regular basis. The Energy Conservation Cell (ENCON) is working on reduction of specific energy consumption in the plant which is directly helping to reduce our carbon footprint. Awareness, training and behavioral change

Environmental training is a continuous process in TRL Krosaki. Training to all employees (including contract workmen), local citizens, customers and suppliers are given in the JJ Irani Centre for Learning (JJICL). Special shop floor trainings are being organized for employees and contract workmen.

Emergency readiness is part of our Safety & Environment process management and organization sustainability. We have implemented SHEQ system that takes care of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 & OHSAS 18001. For common emergencies such as power outages and situation arising out of local strike, TRL Krosaki has provided for stand by generators to ensure power supplies to all emergency units including kilns, hospital and water supply; adequate F.O. storage and provision of emergency staff to run the essential units and services. TRL Krosaki has a detailed emergency preparedness plan to meet different types of emergencies and disasters. Mock drills at different locations with active participation from all members from different

Groups test the plan at regular interval. To support this various programs of safety, health and environment are conducted for the workforce. Sustainability and business continuity analysis is a feature of SPP. The process of management of SHE ensures emergency preparedness and response to help the continuation of operation in the event of emergency. Our Environment Preparedness Plan (EPP) is approved by Director of Factories & Boiler, Govt. of Odisha.

TRL Krosaki has a risk management system in place. GM (IA) is owner of this process and regular inputs are taken from all stake holders and improvements are done. All key risks of the company are being continuously monitored by the senior management team as well as by the Audit Committee and the Board. Several contingency plans are in place to address disasters and emergencies relating to risk factors pertaining to operations, strategy, safety and hazards.

  • We are complying to all legal requirements stipulated by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
  • Consent to Operate under Water Act, 1974; Air Act, 1981 was valid till 31st March, 2016.
  • Hazardous waste authorization under Hazardous Waste (Management, Handling & Trans boundary Movement) Rules, 2008 is valid till 31st March, 2020.
  • Biomedical waste authorization under Biomedical Waste Act, 1989 is valid till 31st March, 2018.
  • All the returns are submitted to State Pollution Control Board (SPCB), Odisha before the due date of submission at the defined frequency:

  • Our New Administrative Building is certified "Green Building" with LEED certification of "Platinum Category"
  • We are recharging groundwater through our water recharge points provided in our New Administrative Building to "Harvest Rain Water"
  • 40 solar streetlights have been fixed in different parts of the plant and township
  • Solar water heaters have been installed in the hospital and canteen,
  • 6 nos. of light pipes have been installed in different locations to trap solar energy during day time.
  • Natural ventilators have been fixed in the plant instead of electrical exhaust fans,
  • Installation of On Line Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Station for continuous monitoring which is linked with SPCB & Digital display at Main Gate for public.
  • Operation of Mobile Vacuum cleaner for pollution - free dust disposal system.
  • Installation of Dry Fog Dust suppression system for suppression of fugitive dust emission in grinding units.
  • About 800 numbers of transparent sheets have been fixed in the plant to avoid day time use of electricity for lighting.
